Forestville Celebrating 100 Years

On Saturday, September 15th from 1- 6 pm the Forestville Chamber & Friends will be turning downtown Forestville into an up close and personal celebration of our community – Think Forestville First for the Good Life.

 The day’s activities will include a Walking Tour from the Fire Department on Mirabel Rd. (the west side of town). This is a wonderful opportunity for townspeople of all ages to meet and greet their local firefighters and – don’t forget the trucks.

Farmworker bill would increase overtime pay

The vegetable farm that Humberto Castaneda Jr.'s family operates east of Forestville employs about 50 workers who pick peppers, squash, tomatillos and tomatoes by hand.
 In Castaneda's view, giving these workers the same overtime benefits as those in other industries is a "bad idea." "Not a lot of farmers can pay overtime. Crops are going to go bad," Castaneda said.
 But others say California farmworkers should be paid overtime like everyone else as a matter of fairness and equality...

Shone Farm's CSA program!

Santa Rosa Junior College’s Shone Farm, the 365-acre west county student farm just off River Road outside Forestville, is now accepting members for its fall season CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) produce box program.  Signup deadline is Monday, Aug. 20. ...The cost for the Fall CSA is $384 for 16 weeks – $24 a week for vegetables, fruit, and a loaf of delicious bread.
A member’s share can be picked up at the SRJC Santa Rosa or Petaluma campuses, The Wineyard at 1305 Cleveland Avenue, or at Shone Farm outside Forestville.

Forestville couple's game helps players lighten up about death

Forget about planning for retirement. Ken and Jannice Kolsbun are way beyond annuities, Social Security and long-term-care insurance. The Forestville couple is determined to help Baby Boomers, the generation whose every passage has been put under a public microscope, leapfrog right over the Golden Years and get ready for The Pearly Gates.

The Kolbuns have dreamed up a new board game, “Funeral Director: A Race to Your Final Resting Place,” aimed an helping people “toy with their own mortality” by taking the fear and denial out of death.

Forestville kids score at County Fair

Forestville Future Farmers of America scored big in the animal auctions at this year’s Sonoma County Fair.

Alyssa Lopez’s meat goat was made Supreme Champion and FFA Grand Champion Meat Goat. The champion animal was purchased by Les Schwab Tires of Sonoma for $1,020, or $12 a pound. Lopez is going to be a senior at El Molino.

Taylor Lunardi, a senior in her first year raising market swine, got Grand Champion for her Yorkshire and reserve champion for her Landrace.

Janet Kracker received the highest bid of $20.50 for each of her two goats. The first lot was purchased by Janet Daveiro and KTC Inc., the second by Joe’s Freight Service and Barbara LaFranchi for a combined total of $4,059. Kracker also is an incoming El Molino senior.

The Reserve Champion Poultry Meat Pen honor went to Amanda Raffety, who will be an El Molino sophomore.

Last Day To Register for Sustainable Winegrowing Field Day

Experts from UC Davis will address the public at Shone Farm in Forestville on Aug. 9.

Sonoma County Winegrape Commission, SRJC Ag and Natural Resources Department and California Sustainable Winegrowing Alliance (CSWA) are co-sponsoring the 12th Annual Sustainable Winegrowing Field Day on Aug. 9. The event will be held at SRJC's Shone Farm and begins at 7:30am. Shone Farm is at 7450 Steve Olson Lane, Forestville.
